What is the difference between counselling and therapy?

Counselling is assisting individuals and families by providing information and guidance about how to manage specific situations such as parenting concerns, communication difficulties, stress or anger management.

Therapy is working with individuals on a deeper level to help them make internal changes that will ultimately improve the quality of their lives. Each person has core beliefs, personality traits and attitudes that can interfere with healthy functioning and can lead to anxiety, depression, stress and relationship difficulties. Therapy helps focus on these interferences while at the same time, determining the strengths within the individual’s personality that serve as a foundation for change.

What types of counselling and therapy does the Adlerian Counselling and Consulting Group (ACCG) specialize in?

Adlerian psychology forms the basis of the counselling and therapy at the ACCG. Adler’s psychology is based on viewing clients in the context of their life experience, past and present, so we can truly understand a person/couple/family from their own perspective and perceptions. We build on people’s perspectives and perceptions by encouraging the client to make positive changes. Adler’s psychology is holistic and therefore contains cognitive, psychodynamic, social and emotion-focused components.

How do I know if I need counselling and/or therapy?

If you are having recurrent personal or relationship problems in your life that are not changing, counselling or therapy can help. Similarly, if you are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or anxious or if you are not coping well, it is worthwhile to consult a counsellor/therapist. A therapist can help you look at your life situation from new vantage points, as well as find different options and directions that can lead to new possibilities.

How can counselling/therapy help me?

Counselling can provide you with information and options that can help you manage difficult situations and find solutions to current challenges. Therapy can help you to change behaviours and attitudes that are interfering with healthy, balanced living.

What can I expect when I come for my first session?

You will be greeted by our Office Manager, Sylvia, who will ask you to fill out a client information form. Your counsellor will meet you and take you into his/her office where you will have an opportunity to get to know each other and discuss your situation, and together determine what the best course of action will be in terms of addressing your needs and concerns.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on many factors and will be discussed with your individual counsellor/therapist.

May I choose my therapist?

There is a description of each therapist on this website. You may select the one that seems closest to what you would be looking for or you can call our Office Manager, Sylvia, and she can direct you to a counsellor/therapist with your specific requests in mind. All counsellors make their own appointments and may have varied lengths of time before an initial appointment.

How do I know the person I am working with is the best choice for my life challenges?

Your therapist will contact you by telephone and discuss your concerns before booking an appointment. If you have any doubts, feel free to discuss them and request other options. We want you to feel comfortable with your choice. It is very important to all of us that you feel satisfied and secure with your therapist.

What do I do if I don't feel the therapist is the best choice to work with me?

If you have started working with a therapist and it becomes clear to you that you are not feeling OK within the relationship, it is best to discuss your feelings with your therapist during a session. While this takes courage, being forthright can be beneficial to both you and the therapist. Your therapist will work with you to choose another Associate who may be better suited to your needs.

How soon after requesting an appointment can it be scheduled?

Depending upon the therapist requested, appointments can frequently be arranged within one to two weeks.

How do I ensure confidentiality?

Confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy and is as important to your therapist as it is to you. Feel free to ask about this at your first session and your therapist will be happy to work out any details that you may require in your particular circumstances.

What are the fees per session?

Fees are discussed at the time of your initial contact with the Centre by Sylvia, our Office Manager. Specific requests or payment of fees will be discussed with your individual therapist.

Is counselling/psychotherapy covered by insurance?

Many personal benefit packages cover a portion of counselling fees but have a maximum allowance per year. It is important to investigate your benefit package regarding counselling services prior to your initial visit. Payment is required following each visit and receipts are issued to be sent to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Yes, clients are expected to cancel within 24 hours of their appointment time to prevent paying the cost of the scheduled session.
